Alabama board approves contracts for new basketball, baseball hires
The Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama met via a video conference on Tuesday to approve contracts for new coaching hires made by the Crimson Tide men’s basketball and baseball programs, as well as several other UA coaches/staffers.
Alabama has announced two hires made by Nate Oats, as Austin Claunch and Ryan Pannone will serve as assistant coaches for the Crimson Tide men’s basketball team this year. Claunch, a former coach at Nicholls State, earned a 2-year deal worth $275,000 per year, while former New Orleans Pelicans assistant Ryan Pannone also received a 2-year deal, this one worth $330,000 per year. The Crimson Tide has yet to announce a third assistant basketball coach.
Alabama hired Rob Vaughn as its new head baseball coach on June 12, and a little more than two weeks later, we know his contract details. Vaughn received a 5-year deal that will pay him an average of $900,000 per year. At Maryland, he had agreed to a contract extension that would pay him $450,000 annually thanks to a $300,000 salary and $150,000 supplemental income. Brad Bohannon’s contract at UA was worth $500,000 per year before his dismissal.
Former interim head coach Jason Jackson also received a 2-year deal worth $300,000 per year to stay on at Alabama. The Crimson Tide has announced Anthony Papio will join the program as a second assistant but has not yet disclosed financial details for the former Maryland assistant.

For football, only one member of Nick Saban’s coaching staff was mentioned on the conference call, and that was one of the longest-tenured figures in the program, Jeff Allen. The associate athletic director for sports medicine, Allen was part of Saban’s original staff in 2007 and received a contract extension through Feb. 28, 2025, that will keep his pay at $400,000 per year.
In addition to Vaughn, seven other UA head coaches received new contracts/deals, including Jonatan Berhane (women’s tennis), Kristy Curry (women’s basketball), Margo Geer (swimming), Ashley Johnston (gymnastics), Patrick Murphy (softball), Jay Seawell (men’s golf) and Dan Waters (track & field).
