Today is the last day of February. On the last day of January, Alabama football received its first commitment for the 2023 recruiting cycle. So, who was it? Four-star cornerback Elliot Washington II out of Venice (Fla.) High School. He made his decision to pull the trigger after attending Junior Day.

At the time, Washington was the No. 136 overall prospect in the On300 rankings for 2022. He was also the No. 10 safety. Fast forward to almost a month later, and he’s now listed as a cornerback who checks in at No. 66 in the latest rankings, which came out on Monday morning. That’s a 70-spot jump for the 5-foot-11, 187-pound defensive back.

Washington is an Alabama legacy, too. His father, Elliot Sr., played basketball for legendary coach Wimp Sanderson back in the early 90s. Now, junior is planning to follow in his father’s Crimson footsteps. He’ll just be making his impact on a field rather than on a court.

With the news of Washington’s position change and bump in the rankings, Alabama now has two of the nation’s top-8 cornerbacks committed for 2023. Last week, Florence (Ala.) standout Jahlil Hurley joined the class after picking the Tide over Georgia and Auburn. Granted, he dropped from No. 25 to 32 in the latest On300 rankings, but he’s still on the path to earning his fifth star.

Like in most years, Alabama is off to a slow start with its current recruiting class. Washington and Hurley are the only two commitments right now, but that will obviously change as things progress through the offseason. The more important aspect is that the quality is there with two top-70 recruits already in the fold. Quantity will come later, as it always does.

We should also note that Washington recently spoke with On3’s Chad Simmons at the 2022 Under Armour Next Camp Series down in Miami and told him his recruitment is “shut down” after being asked about his commitment status. It’s going to be difficult for another program to pry him away, especially when you consider ties to the school and Alabama’s need for defensive backs.
