Alabama commit Walter Bob Jr. isn’t expected to sign a national letter of intent with the Crimson Tide on Wednesday, according to an article from The Daily Advertiser. On Monday, the Lafayette (La.) daily newspaper spoke with Bob’s high school coach Matt McCullough, who confirmed the news.

Instead, the four-star prospect will take the junior college route. Bob has been enrolled at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas since Jan. 7, and according to McCullough, his star defensive lineman will be there for the next “two years to a year-and-a-half.”

This news shouldn’t come as a shock for many Alabama fans. Bob not being able to qualify academically has been rumored for a while now, and according to McCullough, the Crimson Tide coaching staff knew about it, too.

On Tuesday, Bob will have been pledged to Alabama for exactly one calendar year, dating back to Feb. 1 of 2021. He was the first of three commitments that month, joining tight end Elijah Brown and quarterback Ty Simpson. That also makes Bob the longest-standing member of the Crimson Tide’s 2022 recruiting class.

He chose Alabama over Florida, Penn State and several others.

The On3 Consensus rankings have Bob rated as the No. 329 overall player, the No. 40 defensive lineman and the No. 16 player from the state of Louisiana. On3 only has him rated as a three-star prospect — and the No. 45 defensive lineman — though.

Even with the news that Bob won’t sign on Wednesday, Alabama is still bringing in three quality defensive line prospects with this year’s recruiting haul.

Khurtiss Perry out of Montgomery (Ala.) and Jaheim Oatis out of Columbia (Miss.) both check in as top-80 players in the Consensus rankings. Meanwhile, Canadian defensive lineman Isaiah Hastings is the No. 52 overall player, according to On3.
