TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — With starting guard Latrell Wrightsell rupturing his Achilles and being ruled out for the season, the Alabama backcourt has been left shorthanded. In the wake of Wrightsell’s injury, Alabama is considering burning the redshirt of senior transfer Houston Mallette.

“We’ve talked about it. Talked to him and his dad, it’s still on the table,” Alabama head coach Nate Oats said. “We’re kind of trying to see what – you don’t want to mess up what’s best for the kid. In my history of coaching, I always try to do what’s best for the player. Most of the time what’s best for the player is what’s best for the program, we’re trying to figure out if there will be enough minutes to make it worthwhile. That’s definitely on the table, though. We’ve had those discussions here in the last couple days.”

Sources tell BamaOnLine that Mallette is leaning toward burning his redshirt and playing the remainder of the season.

Mallette transferred to Alabama last March from Pepperdine, and after participating in the Crimson Tide’s two preseason exhibition games, it was announced that he would redshirt this season to save his final year of eligibility. The decision to redshirt was made due to two primary factors: Mallette missing parts of summer practice while nursing an injury and a lack of available minutes in the rotation.

Mallette would provide a nice boost in the backcourt with Wrightsell now out of the picture. In Alabama’s two exhibition games, Mallette averaged 10 points per game and made 6-of-11 shots from 3-point range, being his only field goal attempts. Last season at Pepperdine, Mallette averaged 14.7 points per game and shot 41.5 percent from deep.
