Alabama basketball adds another transfer to 2022 class
The Alabama Crimson Tide have been searching the transfer market for more additions to their 2022 class. Nate Oats and Company saw success with their pursuit of former Ohio University point guard Mark Sears last month, and just added another transfer to the fold.
On Wednesday, small forward Dominick Welch informed On3’s Joe Tipton that he had committed to Alabama. This follows a visit that the St. Bonaventure graduate transfer took to Tuscaloosa this week.
Welch chose the Crimson Tide over Texas Tech, which had hosted him for a visit last week. He becomes the seventh member of Alabama’s 2022 class, joining Sears, five-star SF Brandon Miller, four-star PG Jaden Bradley, four-star SG Rylan Griffen, four-star PF Noah Clowney, and JUCO transfer power forward Nick Pringle.
What new Alabama commitment Dominick Welch brings to the table
It’s not a secret that Oats’ staff was in pursuit of players who can stretch the floor. One of their most recent targets was former Oregon State guard Jarod Lucas, who shot nearly 39 percent from three-point territory last season.
Alabama loves to shoot the ball from deep as the team attempted 987 three-pointers in their 2021-2022 campaign. Welch is efficient from distance, and should prove to be a nice addition for what he brings offensively.

In the 2021-22 season, Welch averaged 12.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.3 steals in 37.5 minutes per game. He shot 41.4 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from three, and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line.
This wasn’t just a one-year fluke for Welch, either. Throughout the course of his four-year career, Welch has shot 37.4 percent from downtown, even reaching the 39.2 percent mark in his junior season.
Welch, a native of Buffalo (N.Y.), scored 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting from three in his final game with St. Bonaventure, a matchup in which their opponent was Xavier. Along with sharp shooting from the outside, Welch will bring experience to Alabama as he’s logged nearly 3,800 minutes in his collegiate career.
According to On3’s Jamie Shaw, Welch was the No. 49 overall player on On3’s transfer portal rankings.
