Incoming freshman Jameer Grimsley enters transfer portal
Well, Alabama cornerback Jameer Grimsley wasn’t on campus very long. After only arriving back in December ahead of the Crimson Tide’s Rose Bowl matchup against Michigan, the incoming freshman has now entered the transfer portal, according to Pete Nakos with On3.
Grimsley is the eighth defensive back to enter the transfer portal this offseason, joining the following players:
- S Caleb Downs
- CB Trey Amos
- S Kristian Story
- CB Earl Little II
- CB Dezz Ricks
- S Jake Pope
- CB Antonio Kite
Throw that in with Kool-Aid McKinstry, Terrion Arnold and Jaylen Key all either going to the NFL or exhausting their eligibility, and that’s now 11 losses in Alabama’s secondary. Some of these decisions were bound to happen anyway, but the retirement of seven-time national championship-winning coach Nick Saban obviously played a major role in how hard these positions have been hit.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings for 2024, Grimsley was rated as the No. 157 player nationally, No. 22 cornerback and No. 22 player from the state of Florida. On3 had him rated quite a bit higher, slotting him in at No. 100 nationally and the No. 15 cornerback. He was considered somewhat of a project, but his combination of size, length and athleticism give him tremendous upside.
Still, Alabama isn’t exactly hurting when it comes to incoming cornerback depth.
- Domani Jackson: 5-star / No. 5 overall
- Jahlil Hurley: 4-star / No. 50 overall
- Jaylen Mbakwe: 5-star / No. 18 overall
- Zay Mincey: 4-star / No. 48 overall
- Zabien Brown: 4-star / No. 54 overall
They’ll need at least two or three of these guys to emerge as strong starting options or key depth though. If the Crimson Tide could land Washington cornerback Jabaar Muhammad out of the transfer portal, that’d absolutely go a long ways in helping balance the talent and experience of this group. He’s the top-rated cornerback (and No. 11 overall player) who’s entered so far this offseason, and he’s already played over 2,000 snaps with 28 starts in his four seasons at either Washington or Oklahoma State.
