The latest edition College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday, and Alabama once again checked in at No. 8 despite a decisive 42-28 win over a top-20 LSU squad on Saturday night in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

As things sit, the top-four teams have remained unchanged with No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Florida State. In fact, there wasn’t any movement amongst the top-eight teams, as Washington is still checking in at No. 5, Oregon still sits at No. 6 and Texas remains at No. 7 after Week 10 of the college football season.

This conversation is going to be fascinating to watch.

It’s possible four of the five undefeated teams at the top remain unbeaten, but Alabama could have control over the fate of one of those teams if it were to win SEC West. Should the Tide get past Kentucky this weekend and then Auburn later this month, they’ll move on to face Georgia in the SEC Championship. At that point, they’ll have a chance to knock off one of the remaining unbeatens while Ohio State and Michigan are also set to face each other on Nov. 25.

In that scenario, the conversation then focuses in on the three potential one-loss teams, assuming they all hold at only one loss. Those teams include Oregon, Texas and Alabama. The Week 2 home loss to the Longhorns certainly hurts the Crimson Tide’s argument of getting in over Steve Sarkisian’s squad. Plus, there’s the fact that Oregon sits ahead of them. They still have to play undefeated Washington again though, so that would eliminate one of those two.

Will the current order hold if both Texas and Alabama win out? Maybe, but an SEC Championship win over Georgia — in addition to the other wins on the resume (Ole Miss, LSU and Tennesseee) — would be difficult to turn down. But there’s a growing belief that Alabama could still get left out of the party, even if it were to exit Conference Championship Weekend with the lone loss to Texas. That’s wild to think about.
