Alabama DB DeVonta Smith enters NCAA transfer portal
Alabama defensive back DeVonta Smith has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos reports. Smith is the 13th Crimson Tide player to transfer in the 20-day window.
Smith, a redshirt junior, played in all 12 of Alabama’s regular-season games and made 11 starts at the Husky positon in Kane Wommack’s “Swarm” defense. Smith has recorded 30 tackles, five pass breakups and one forced fumble in his first year as a starter for the Tide.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Smith has appeared in 25 career games at Alabama. He played in nine games as a true freshman in 2021, did not play at all in 2022 – a redshirt season – and four as a redshirt sophomore in 2023. Smith is responsible for 36 career tackles at UA.

Smith was a 4-star prospect out of La Salle High School in the 2021 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He was rated as the nation’s No. 179 overall recruit and the No. 13 corner, though he moved to safety at Alabama. The cousin of Tide legend Shaun Alexander, Smith chose UA the in-state Ohio State Buckeyes out of high school.
The 20-day portal window opened on Monday, December 9, and will close on Saturday, December 28. Due to a later bowl game, Alabama players will have five extra days to enter.
