Alabama DB Malachi Moore named to Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list
The Wuerffel Trophy announced its preseason watch list on Thursday morning, continuing two weeks of summer reveals, and one Alabama veteran was among the list of 108 players.
Senior safety Malachi Moore was named to the watch list for the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy, which recognizes the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The award is named for former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who is well known for his commitment to both service and leadership.
Moore has played in 39 games over the last three years and started games at the Star position in all three seasons. Late in his freshman year in 2020, he dealt with an injury that proved to be a nagging setback. But with three safeties turning pro, Moore could fill any of the roles left vacant by Jordan Battle, Brian Branch or DeMarcco Hellams – but most likely safety. He will also be a leader in a young secondary that will have plenty of new faces this season.

This marks the third preseason watch list that Moore has appeared on, joining the Lott IMPACT Trophy (another award that measures off-field impact) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is annually presented to the best defensive player in college football. On both of those watch lists, Moore was joined by Kool-Aid McKinstry, but McKinstry was snubbed from Thursday’s revealing of the Paul Hornung Award watch list. That goes to the nation’s most versatile player.
Barrett Jones was the Crimson Tide’s first and only Wuerffel Trophy winner back in 2011.
