Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is expected to round out his on-field coaching staff with a Group of 5 offensive coordinator. Georgia Southern OC and quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis is expected to be hired as the Crimson Tide’s tight ends coach, BamaOnline has learned.

Ryan Fowler of Tide 100.9 was first to report the hire.

Ellis has spent the last two seasons at Georgia Southern as the offensive coordinator. In 2022, the Eagles jumped from the nation’s No. 124 passing offense (147.1 yards per game) to No. 4 (329.9 ypg), and they were again among the top 15 this past season (302.2 ypg, 13th).

Before returning to his home state, he spent three years at Western Kentucky. He was first the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2019-20 before coaching WKU’s inside receivers in 2021. He was also at Western Kentucky from 2014-16, where he worked as an offensive quality control staffer before moving up to running backs and receivers.

Ellis spent the 2017-18 seasons at USC, where he was first an offensive assistant before being promoted to quarterback coach in 2018. He was tasked with developing the successor to Sam Darnold – the No. 3 overall draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. A former quarterback at UAB, Ellis began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 2012-13.

Ellis doesn’t have experience coaching tight ends but joins DeBoer’s staff at Alabama after a bit of shuffling. Nick Sheridan, who was originally hired as the tight ends coach, is expected to be promoted to offensive coordinator and coach quarterbacks after the departure of Ryan Grubb, who left for the Seattle Seahawks. None of the new hires have been announced.
