Alabama is hiring Rob Vaughn as its next baseball coach, BamaOnLine has confirmed. Vaughn spent the past 11 years at Maryland, including the last six as the Terrapins’ head coach where he led the Terrapins to a 183-117 (.610) overall record and 84-54 (.609) mark in conference play.

John Talty of Bama247 was first to report the expected hire.

He was named the Terps’ head coach on June 22, 2017, after serving as associate head coach. The youngest head coach in all of Power 5 baseball, Vaughn, 35, has helped turn the Maryland program around and has been on the Terrapins’ staff for the three winningest seasons in school history, including the Terps’ only four 40-win seasons (2014, 2015, 2022, 2023). Because of this, he has been named the Big Ten Coach of the Year each of the last two years.

The 2023 season was one for the record books as Maryland claimed their second consecutive Big Ten regular-season title and third straight NCAA Regional appearance. Vaughn led the team to the 40-win mark for the fourth time in program history, recording 42 victories and 17 wins in Big Ten play. The Terps were one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, setting program records in runs (578), hits (684), walks (385) and RBIs (552) in the 2023 campaign.

Before his stint at Maryland, Vaughn spent the 2011-12 seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Kansas State – his alma mater – where he coached catchers and hitters and was in charge of base-running instruction. A native of Humble, Texas, Vaughn began his college coaching career in 2010 after spending two seasons as a player in the Chicago White Sox organization.

Vaughn is set to take over a Crimson Tide baseball program that turned its season around after the midseason dismissal of coach Brad Bohannon, who was involved in a gambling scandal. UA won 13 of its final 19 games, including a sweep of the Tuscaloosa Regional to earn its first berth in the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament since 2010. Alabama finished the year with a 43-21 record under interim coach, Jason Jackson, who is expected to remain on staff.

Last year, Vaughn received a contract extension that saw his annual pay increase to $300,000, while he also received $150,000 of supplemental income. For comparison, Bohannon’s contract at Alabama was worth $500,000 ($275,000 salary, $225,000 talent fee) before he was relieved of his duties on May 4. Financial terms will be later approved by the UA board of trustees.
