Alabama’s College Football Playoff hopes are on life support following the Crimson Tide’s unexpected an disappointing loss to Oklahoma last weekend. Due to the loss, the CFP selection committee ranked Alabama No. 13 in its newest batch of rankings on Tuesday night.

That ranking would make Kalen DeBoer‘s first Alabama team the second team out in the newly-expanded 12-team playoff if the season ended today.

On the resume, Alabama has wins over three teams currently ranked in the top 25, being No. 6 Georgia, No. 15 South Carolina and No. 21 Missouri. Two of its three losses however are to unranked teams in Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, the other coming to No. 8 Tennessee.

As a refresher, the College Football Playoff expanded from four teams to 12 teams this season, but it’s not as simple as taking the top 12 teams in the rankings. There are automatic bids reserved for the five highest-ranked conference champions, likely being the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and one Group of Five conference. The top four conference champions will be given the top four seeds in the playoff and first-round bye, with the remaining conference champion and the seven at-large bids being seeding accordingly thereafter.

This is the fourth of six batches of rankings the selection committee will release between now and the end of the season. The committee will release new rankings every Tuesday night until conference championship week, with the final rankings being released on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. CT.

Alabama has one last chance to make a good impression for the committee against Auburn on Saturday, and likely needs a dominant win plus some chaos around the country to have any chance at making the first 12-team playoff.
