If you can believe it, we are officially under the 50-day mark until Alabama is back on a live-game football field. After coming up short in the national championship game against Georgia back in early January, the Crimson Tide will once again be searching for its seventh title under Nick Saban.

This year’s season opener will be against the Utah State Aggies on Sept. 3 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

With today being July 19, that means we are only 46 days away from the return of Alabama football. The team here at BamaOn3 is ready to celebrate every day of the countdown standing between now and the start of football season. Let’s focus on a player who represents — or has represented — the No. 46.

*Note: BamaOn3 is also doing a Countdown to Fall Camp, which is only 17 days away.

Who currently wears the No. 46?

Alabama has two players on its roster currently wearing the No. 46, both of which are walk-ons. On offense, it’s freshman tight end Peyton Fox out of Pelham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian. The other is fellow first-year defensive back Chase Davis from Paul W. Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa.

Who’s a noteworthy former player to wear it?

The first player to wear the No. 46 during the Saban era was former walk-on receiver Kyle Pennington. A year later in 2008, it was former Huntsville (Ala.) Huntsville safety Wesley Neighbors. The most notable player to wear it since Saban’s arrival is former fullback/tight end Michael Nysewander.

Nysewander is a fantastic story of an Alabama walk-on who turned into a contributor before his playing career was complete. Known by his teammates as “Highway 46” for his gritty style of play and blocking chops as a tight end/fullback, Nysewander had the mentality and work ethic that Saban covets. After briefly spending time with the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2016, Nysewander is now a college coach. He’s currently on Lane Kiffin’s staff at Ole Miss.
