Soon after Alabama’s spring practice on Tuesday, BamaOnLine learned that sophomore wide receiver Jalen Hale had gone down with some sort of lower-body injury. Fast forward to Thursday, and we’ve now learned more about the severity of that injury. UA head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke to the media after the team’s first scrimmage and revealed that Hale did, in fact, suffer a “significant knee injury.”

“He did have a significant knee injury,” DeBoer told reporters when asked for an update. “He’ll be down for the spring, but there’s still some evaluation that will still take place to figure out what that timeline will be as far as the rest of the year and so forth.”

The morning after the news broke, I went in depth about where Alabama turns at wide receiver with Hale going down. No, he isn’t guaranteed to be one of the Crimson Tide’s starters this season, but at the very least, we expect him to be an important part of the rotation. So with the news that things remain up in the air as far as his status, it’s important to try and identify who could fill the role we’ve been projecting for him.

Last season, Hale appeared in 13 games while earning a total of 155 snaps on offense. And despite only being a true freshman, he tied for eighth on the team in targets with 13, which was the most of any of the first-year guys. Not only that, but he managed to bring in five of those targets for 148 yards and a score, which means his average was a team-leading 29.6 yards per catch.
