TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The initial College Football Playoff rankings for the 2022 season have officially been released. On Tuesday night, it was revealed that Alabama ranked No. 6, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given how things have shaken out over the first nine weeks.

This weekend, the Tide are set to face No. 10 LSU in a tough, hostile night environment in Baton Rouge. Then next weekend, they’ll travel to Oxford to take on No. 11 Ole Miss, who’s currently on its bye week. If Alabama wants to get back to Atlanta for another SEC Championship appearance, it’ll have to earn it.

Another interesting tidbit from Tuesday night’s reveal includes Tennessee checking in at No. 1 over Ohio State (No. 2) and Georgia (No. 3), who tops the rankings in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll. That means Alabama’s lone loss of the season came on the road against the top team in the country with a last-second field goal.

With the selection committee choosing to value balance, Alabama being No. 9 in yards per play on offense (7.05) and No. 5 in yards per play allowed on defense (4.25) certainly helps their arguement to be ranked over a team like undefeated TCU, who checked in at No. 7.

As things sit, the Crimson Tide only have one ranked victory, which came on the road against No. 24 Texas back in Week 2. Since then, quality teams such as Arkansas and Mississippi State have fallen off with multiple losses. These next two weeks will provide some resume power, however.

Only five SEC teams landed in the top 25. That’s down from the seven who were included in the inital rankings for 2021. Still, all five of those teams are ranked amongst the top 11, which tells you how much respect the committee has for the conference. The Pac-12 and ACC also tied the SEC for having the most with five. The Big Ten and Big 12 each came in with four.
