Alabama football remains atop latest national championship odds

Las Vegas recently updated its national championship odds for the 2022 college football season, and guess who sits at the top of those odds? I’ll go ahead and assume that you guessed correctly by saying the Alabama Crimson Tide, who — according to Vegas Insider — currently sits at plus-198.

Really, Alabama having the best odds shouldn’t come as a surprise. Stop and think about some of the key factors that go into winning a national championship. In fact, let’s go over a few returning factors that should play in favor of the Crimson Tide.

  • Head coach – Nick Saban
  • Both coordinators – Bill O’Brien (OC), Pete Golding (DC)
  • Top offensive player in CFB – Bryce Young
  • Top defensive player in CFB – Will Anderson

Those four factors alone should have Alabama in the hunt for another title, but there’s more. The old adage “defense wins championships” doesn’t hold as true as it once did, but it still plays a major role. Georgia rode its defense all the way to the promise land just last season.

Alabama fielded a top-7 defense nationally in 2021 and return a majority of its starters from that group. In fact, the argument could be made that the unit will actually be better this upcoming season, which would certainly have an impact on the Crimson Tide’s title hopes.

Despite losing plenty talent to the NFL — including six Day 1-2 selections — Alabama won’t be short on depth. The team’s most recent signing class ranked No. 2 in the country with six more potential starters also being added through the transfer portal. It’s difficult to argue against that.
