Tuesday provided Alabama fans with a casual reminder that the transfer portal isn’t limited to just the players, as wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins is making the move to Texas A&M to take on the same role. That news was first broken by Billy Liucci of TexAgs.

Wiggins has been with Nick Saban at Alabama since the 2019 season. He inherited a strong crop of receivers that included Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, all of whom were first-round draft picks. He had a hand in helping Ohio State transfer Jameson Williams reach his full potential in Tuscaloosa, and also helped John Metchie III go from barely a top-300 recruit in 2019 to a high second-round draft pick in 2022.

The wide receiver recruiting hasn’t slowed down any over the last few years, but a lack of develop has been a major talking point amongst Alabama fans. The program signed four top-100 receivers in 2021, and all of them have since transferred after disappointing careers. Some of those issues have seemingly extended to other classes, too. In other words, there have been some highs and lows during his five-year stint in Tuscaloosa.

Spending the last half decade working alongside Saban has certainly helped Wiggins, but getting that continuity has also been beneficial for the seven-time national championship-winning head coach. There will be some transition, but whoever replaces Wiggins will have an ultra-talented group of pass-catchers at his disposal.

Mike Elko was named Texas A&M’s new head coach in late November. He’s currently being tasked with getting things on track after Jimbo Fisher struggled to turn the program around. Getting a wide receivers coach who has top-level SEC experience could go a long ways in making that happen, but it’ll be an uphill battle after losing star pass-catcher Evan Stewart to the transfer portal.

Stay tuned for updates on who Alabama targets to replace Wiggins.
