Alabama's Caleb Downs wins Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award
Alabama safety Caleb Downs was selected as the 2023 recipient of the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Wednesday morning.
Downs was one of five finalists for this year’s award and was joined by Rueben Bain (Miami (Fla.)), Kevin Concepcion (NC State), Noah Fifita (Arizona) and Dillon Thieneman (Purdue). The Hoschton, Ga., native is the second winner of the Alexander Award in Alabama history, pairing with Will Anderson Jr., who took home the hardware in 2020.

- Put together a standout first season so far, leading Alabama in tackles and ranking fourth in the SEC with 95 stops entering the Bowl Season
- Added two tackles for loss (-10 yards), a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to go with a pair of interceptions
- Also contributed in the return game, combining for 87 yards and a touchdown on his four returns
- Named the SEC Newcomer and Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season
- A two-time SEC Freshman of the Week (Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State) and the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week following the matchup in Starkville
