Former Vanderbilt offensive tackle Tyler Steen is planning to visit Alabama and several other schools next month. That news comes from Andrew Ivins with 247Sports, who spoke to Steen’s father, Daris, sometime on Tuesday. In addition to Alabama, Steen also plans to take visits to NC State, LSU and Penn State.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound offensive tackle has been in the transfer portal since mid-January. Over the last month, he’s become a highly-coveted target for several prominent programs, including the Crimson Tide.

“He’s going to make a decision in March,” Daris told 247Sports. “He finishes [his internship] in April and then he graduates in May. He has just been trying to narrow it down and all of those schools are good choices. We’re just trying to make sure it’s the right fit.”

Is Alabama the right fit for Steen?

If Nick Saban thinks so, who are we to question him? The Tide are losing both starting offensive tackles in Evan Neal, the best offensive lineman on the team, and Chris Owens. With Steen’s experience as both a left and right tackle, it makes sense for Alabama to value his experience and production.

Earlier today, I broke down the depth chart projections for Alabama’s offense. The interior spots seem to have plenty of capable, experienced options in Emil Ekiyor, Javion Cohen, Seth McLaughlin, Darrian Dalcourt and potentially JC Latham. Tackle also features enough talent, but there’s a lot less certainty. Steen can provide clarity and experience to the unit, similar to what Jermaine Burton did for the wide receivers.

Over the last three seasons, Steen has started 32 games. Of those 32 games, 12 starts have come at right tackle with the rest coming at left tackle. The On3 Transfer Portal rankings have him rated as the No. 36 offensive tackle. The Alabama coaching staff probably views him a lot higher than that though.

The Tide have already added three names out of the transfer portal. That includes Burton, cornerback Eli Ricks and running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Will Steen make a fourth addition to the roster? Stay tuned for updates as we learn more.
