Alabama guard Houston Mallette burns redshirt, will play for rest of 2024-25 season
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Alabama guard Houston Mallette will made his season debut against North Carolina tonight, entering the game at the 11:40 mark of the first half and burning his redshirt. Mallette will continue to play for the Crimson Tide throughout the rest of the 2024-25 season, using his final year of eligibility.
The decision to play Mallette comes in the wake of a season-ending Achilles injury to Latrell Wrightsell, leaving the guard room thinned just one month into the season. Now with more minutes available, Alabama head coach Nate Oats and Mallette’s family felt it was the best decision to play him for the remainder of the season.
Mallette transferred to Alabama last March from Pepperdine, and after participating in the Crimson Tide’s two preseason exhibition games, it was announced that he would redshirt this season to save his final year of eligibility. The decision to redshirt was made due to two primary factors: Mallette missing parts of summer practice while nursing an injury and a lack of available minutes in the rotation.

Mallette would provide a nice boost in the backcourt with Wrightsell now out of the picture. In Alabama’s two exhibition games, Mallette averaged 10 points per game and made 6-of-11 shots from 3-point range, being his only field goal attempts. Last season at Pepperdine, Mallette averaged 14.7 points per game and shot 41.5 percent from deep.
Mallette’s addition to the active roster makes 10 available Alabama players for the foreseeable future. Wrightsell is out for the season, freshman forward Naas Cunningham is still redshirting, and senior guard Chris Youngblood is expected back very soon from a preseason ankle injury.
