Alabama basketball guard JD Davison has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday after his performances against Ole Miss on Feb. 9 and Arkansas on Feb. 12. This is now the second time this season the Letohatchee (Ala.) Calhoun School product has received SEC honors.

Yes, Davison has been inconsistent during his first season in Tuscaloosa. But this past week, he proved why he was labeled a five-star prospect coming out of high school. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard averaged 27 minutes per game against the Rebels and Razorbacks. In total, he scored a combined 29 points to go with 7 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.

The better of the two performances came against Ole Miss when he made 7 of his 8 field goals — including going 2-for-2 from 3-point range. His 18 points were the second-highest total of his young career, trailing only the 20 points he had against Gonzaga over two months ago. Davison also added 8 assists, 3 rebounds, a block and a steal in that game.

It’s no coincidence that Alabama is on a two-game win streak with the performances we’ve seen from Davison. Following the Arkansas game, coach Nate Oats shared why his young point guard is so crucial to the team’s success.

“He’s huge,” Oats said. “I think (Jahvon) Quinerly has struggled at times this year. I think Quinerly, when he’s on and he’s mentally locked in and he’s playing with confidence, he’s maybe the best point guard in the country. But sometimes he’s not. Tonight was one of those nights. I thought he maybe got shook a little bit. he had a few too many turnovers. I didn’t think he was aggressive enough.”

Oats was also pleased with Davison’s performance against the Razorbacks.

“JD was good,” Oats said. “He attacked downhill. He was aggressive. He’s a bigger guard that (Chris) Lykes couldn’t really handle his size. They took Lykes off him, put Lykes on Keon Ellis for some matchup stuff. Teams know he’s bigger. He’s a little more physical. He can come downhill. He’s a little bit different, maybe not as shifty as (Jahvon Quinerly), but he’s a big, strong, physical guard.

“He went 2-for-2 last game from three. He was 1-of-3 tonight. So over the last two games, he’s 3-of-5. He’s shooting the ball well enough where teams gotta be honest with him.”

On the year, Davison is averaging 8.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Alabama will host Mississippi State on Wednesday. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN2. The Crimson Tide have been beaten by the Bulldogs once this season when they went to Starkville back on Jan. 15 and came up short with a 76-78 final score. State has lost six of their last eight games since then, however.
