Alabama is reportedly adding a former Michigan assistant to its coaching staff.

The Crimson Tide is hiring George Helow, according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. The exact role was not specified in the report, but Alabama is currently looking for an outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator after Coleman Hutzler was hired as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State. Hutzler will remain with the Tide for the playoff.

Helow, 36, is expected to begin working immediately for Alabama head coach Nick Saban, according to Feldman’s report, as the No. 4-ranked Crimson Tide gets set to face his old team, the top-ranked Wolverines, in the Rose Bowl semifinal on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif. Alabama is scheduled to hold its first College Football Playoff practice on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Helow coached linebackers at Michigan from 2021-22. Prior to his most recent stint in Ann Arbor, Mich., he served as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Maryland in 2020. Helow spent the 2016-19 seasons at Colorado State, filling several roles (defensive quality control, linebackers, safeties) and working with Alabama tight ends coach Joe Cox.

Helow started his coaching career in Tuscaloosa, Ala., as a defensive intern in Alabama’s championship campaign in 2012 before moving on to Florida State as a graduate assistant. His first on-field coaching job was at Georgia, where he coached safeties from 2014-15. That was under former Crimson Tide assistant Jeremy Pruitt, who was the DC in Athens, Ga.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Helow played college football at Ole Miss.
