Former Alabama linebacker Christian Harris is off the board after being taken No. 75 overall by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. That makes him the fifth former Crimson Tide standout to be selected so far, joining offensive tackle Evan Neal, wide receivers Jameson Williams and John Metchie and defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis.

Oddly enough, the Texans were also the team to draft Metchie in the early second round, which means Harris will be reuniting with his Alabama teammate in Houston after spending three seasons together in Tuscaloosa.

Arriving in the summer of 2019, Harris immediately inserted himself into the conversation at inside linebacker. Granted, it took season-ending injuries to projected starters Dylan Moses and Joshua McMillon to get Harris into the starting lineup, but he never looked back once he took over as Alabama’s WILL linebacker.

Over those next three years, Harris would put up 220 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 6 pass deflections, an interception and 2 forced fumbles. His best performance — at least statistically — came this past season when he had 80 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 3 pass deflections and both of his forced fumbles.

Back during the season, Alabama coach Nick Saban spoke of the strides Harris has made in development.

“Christian has played well for us this year,” Saban told reporters. “I think that he’s been a very good player, he’s very athletic. I think he has improved dramatically from a year ago [2020] to this year. He has had a really good attitude about what he’s trying to accomplish.”

Coming out of high school, Harris was a four-star prospect who was rated as the nation’s No. 129 overall player, No. 16 linebacker and No. 6 player from the state of Louisiana, according to the On3 Consensus rankings.
