TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Inside linebacker Deontae Lawson, Alabama’s signal caller on defense, left Saturday’s game against Ole Miss with a lower-extremity injury, and he did not return.

Following the 24-10 win for the Crimson Tide, head coach Nick Saban shared the latest.

“He’s got a sprained ankle,” Saban said. “He’s gonna be day-to-day. It’s a pretty good one, so nobody knows exactly how long it will take for him to respond. So that’s all I can tell you about that one.”

Lawson exited the game early in the second quarter, and after spending time in the medical tent on the UA sideline, he walked to the locker room with a limp and did not return to the game. The redshirt sophomore recorded one tackle and one quarterback prior to his injury.

With Lawson out, Alabama turned to a trio of linebackers in the middle of its defense – Trezmen Marshall, Jihaad Campbell and Kendrick Blackshire. Campbell finished second on the defense with seven tackles, while Marshall and Blackshire tallied three apiece. Blackshire, who was the fourth inside ‘backer to see the field, also recorded one TFL and one hurry.

“I feel like anybody on the defense can step,” linebacker Dallas Turner said. “Of course, it’s always a next-man-up mentality here. That’s how I played my freshman year. But just seeing Deontae go down, it hurt my heart because that’s my brother. But he’s gonna bounce back, for sure. We have one of the best training staff’s in the world.”

Offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson also left Saturday’s conference opener with an injury. He replaced starting right guard Darrian Dalcourt, who appeared to sustain an injury of his own. But Dalcourt was able to return to the game, while Ferguson went to the locker room.

Alabama will next play at Mississippi State on Saturday, Sept. 30 (8 p.m. CT on ESPN).
