Linebacker Deontae Lawson will return to Alabama for his redshirt senior season in 2025.

“The University of Alabama has been home for the last four years, and I cannot imagine a better place to learn and grow on the way to graduating while working towards a master’s degree,” Lawson said in a statement on social media.

“This program and the staff have been like a second family to me. The opportunity I have been given to play for Coach Saban and Coach DeBoer is a blessing. I want to finish what I started from the day I stepped on campus, and that includes winning a national championship.”

A two-and-a-half-year starter, Lawson played in 11 of the Crimson Tide’s games this fall before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the road loss to Oklahoma. Prior to his setback, the in-state linebacker recorded 76 tackles, which is still second on the team despite missing two games. Lawson was also responsible for 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble in his fourth year at Alabama.

Lawson has played in 37 career games during his Crimson Tide tenure, including 11 in each of the last three seasons. He appeared in four games as a freshman in 2021 and redshirted. The next year, he played in 11 games and made four starts. In 2023, he became the signal-caller of the defense as a redshirt sophomore and started the contests he was healthy to play in. That continued this year before Lawson left the Oklahoma game due to injury.

The Mobile, Alabama native was voted a permanent captain by his teammates prior to the 2024 campaign and was selected as a Butkus Award semifinalist each of the last two seasons.

Lawson will return to lead an Alabama inside linebacker unit that will also welcome back Justin Jefferson, who announced he will come back in 2025. The Tide has four other scholarship ILBs set to return this offseason, while the team added three true freshmen and Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green, who committed to the Crimson Tide back on Dec. 21.

Lawson is the fourth defensive player to announce he will return for UA’s 2025 season, along with Jefferson and two Tide starting defensive linemen, LT Overton and Tim Keenan.
