Alabama LB Jihaad Campbell explains decision to play in bowl game
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Bowl opt-outs have become increasingly common for teams that miss the College Football Playoff in recent years, but it doesn’t seem like that epidemic will hit the Alabama program this bowl season.
Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell, a first team All-SEC selection who’s viewed as one of the Crimson Tide’s top NFL prospects on the team, said there wasn’t even a decision to make for him as he prepares for the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan.
“I’m playing. Hell yeah I’m playing,” Campbell said. “I didn’t even think about that. I want to play with my brothers, it’s another opportunity to showcase my talents, and everybody else to showcase their talents and all the hard work they put in.”
Campbell was asked if there was any discussion among teammates about whether they were going to play or not.
“There was no discussion. I’m playing,” Campbell said. “This is what I love to do. I have a passion for it. I have a competitive nature, I can’t not play.”

“There was no announcement, no nothing. I came out to practice every day so far, and was ready to work.”
The junior linebacker leads Alabama’s defense with 106 tackles, including 54 solo stops. He also paces the Crimson Tide with 11.5 tackles for loss and five sacks, as he moves all over the defensive formation. Campbell is responsible for two quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one interception during 12 games this fall, as well.
Talking to other Crimson Tide players following Tuesday morning’s practice, it doesn’t seem like there will be many opt-outs for this game, if any at all, confirming what head coach Kalen DeBoer suspected during his Sunday press conference.
“Everyone should be playing,” cornerback Domani Jackson said.
Alabama’s bowl game against Michigan will kick off at 11 a.m. CT on New Year’s Eve from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
