One of the nation’s top basketball prospects has been officially announced as a signee for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

On Wednesday, Bama’s men’s basketball program announced the signing of Five-Star Plus+ small forward Derrion Reid. Reid publicly committed to Alabama back on Dec. 22, 2023, picking the program over a final group of Florida State and Georgia. He later informed BamaOnLine that he had already signed his National Letter of Intent with the school during the Nov. 8-15 Early Signing Period.

“We are thrilled to welcome Derrion and his family to the University of Alabama,” Oats said of Reid in a statement released by Alabama on Wednesday. “Derrion is a top-10 player in the country because of his versatility on offense and can guard multiple positions on defense. He possesses elite athleticism with the ability to finish above the rim, has great size for his position and can score in a multitude of ways.

“He excelled in the state of Georgia and has continued to thrive during his time at Prolific Prep. Not only is he a great player but he will be a great ambassador for the university and has excelled in the classroom. We couldn’t be more excited to have Derrion and his family join our program.”

Alabama had long been in the mix for Derrion Reid.

The staff extended an offer to Reid back in October 2021, and welcomed him on campus the following summer for his first-ever visit to the school. Bama would continue their push despite changes to the coaching staff, and got the Augusta (Ga.) native back on campus this past fall for an official visit.

That consistent and steady pursuit from Alabama played a key role in Reid’s decision to join them at the next level.

“They’ve just been there the longest,” Reid previously told BOL of his decision. “They’ve been there since the beginning. Obviously, my connection with Coach Oats. Even talking with coaches that left later, like Pettway. He left his staff, but still had good things to say.

“Their playing style. Also, the players they’ve got. Being able to get better every day and get to the next level — I know I can go there and do that.”

Per the On3 Industry Rankings, Reid is the No. 12 overall prospect in the 2024 class. He’s also the fourth-ranked small forward and the top-ranked senior in the state of California.

He is a part of a 2024 class for Alabama that features Prolific Prep teammate Aiden Sherrell and top-50 overall senior Naas Cunningham. The group is the No. 4 recruiting class in the country.
