Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner has entered the NCAA transfer portal as a men’s lacrosse player, BamaOnLine has confirmed. This move allows Buchner to be immediately eligible.

Buchner joined the Crimson Tide football program this summer after spending his first two years at Notre Dame, where he played in 13 games and made three starts for the Fighting Irish. Buchner followed new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Alabama, as the Crimson Tide quarterback battle was unsettled after 14 spring practices and the A-Day Game.

“We wanted to give our quarterbacks in our program every opportunity to win the job in spring practice,” said head coach Nick Saban at the 2023 NFL Draft. “We felt like we needed to add some competition in the room, and Tyler was certainly a guy that was gonna be the starter last year at Notre Dame, got injured, played in the bowl game, played really well.

“So we thought he would add a lot of competition, and we think he’s got the right kind of character and attitude to be a positive influence on our team.”

Buchner has played in two games for Alabama, including the opener against Middle Tennessee and Week 3 at South Florida. Buchner started at USF but after going 5-of-14, was replaced by Ty Simpson – and the next week by Jalen Milroe – and has not seen the field since. Buchner attempted 19 passes during his two appearances this fall and completed eight of them for 61 yards. He also rushed for 20 yards and one touchdown on three attempts.

A former 4-star recruit out of San Diego, Calif., Buchner’s Alabama bio states he was “a multi-sport athlete who also competed in lacrosse” while at The Bishop’s School. According to Inside Lacrosse, Buchner was a highly-touted midfielder and committed to play lacrosse for the University of Michigan when he was in eighth grade. Now, turning his focus back to lacrosse, Buchner will reportedly finish out the season and return to Notre Dame.

The NCAA transfer portal’s 30-day window opened on Monday, Dec. 4, and Buchner became the first Alabama player to enter his name. Players have until Jan. 2 to choose to transfer.
