TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama star running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been named the Offensive Player of the Week by the Southeastern Conference after his jaw-dropping performance in a 49-26 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks this past weekend. That news was first announced by the SEC on Monday morning.

Gibbs ran for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, which comes out to 11.4 yards per rush. The Georgia Tech transfer also added two receptions for 20 yards, bringing his total to 226 yards on 20 touches. That’s quite the performance considering it was a road contest against a top-20 opponent.

This type of impact is exactly what people were expecting when Gibbs elected to finish his college career in Tuscaloosa, however. Granted, the rushing yardage was somewhat of a pleasant surprise considering his total through the first four games was 172 yards and zero rushing touchdowns.

Gibbs provided scoring runs of 72 and 76 yards, and they both came as Alabama was trying to reassurt its dominance after squandering away a 28-0 lead. With quarterback Bryce Young getting injured in the second quarter, the game plan shifted to more of a run-oriented attack.

Backup signal-caller Jalen Milroe contributed to the impressive output (six carries for 91 yards and a touchdown), but Gibbs was responsible for 65% of this team’s 317 yards on the ground. Alabama’s Director of Sports Performance, David Ballou, pointed out on Twitter that Gibbs reached an impressive 22.8 miles per hour on his 72-yard scoring strike.

Through five games, Gibbs has 585 total yards of offense (378 rushing, 207 receiving) to go along with five touchdowns. Those numbers mean that he’s averaging over 100 yards — 117, to be exact — and a score per week. Not bad for a dynamic offensive weapon, right?

Gibbs will look to keep that production going against Texas A&M (3-2, 1-1 SEC) this weekend in Tuscaloosa.
