Alabama RB Jase McClellan named to Maxwell Award preseason watch list
The Maxwell Award revealed its preseason watch list for the 2023 season Monday morning, kicking off two weeks of watch list unveilings, and an Alabama senior made the cut.
Crimson Tide running back Jase McClellan was among the 84 players on the Maxwell Award’s preseason watch list. The Maxwell Award – named after Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, a Swarthmore College football player, coach and sportswriter – has been annually presented to the best player in college football since 1937. Now in its 87th season of existence, it is the premier award at the ESPN Home Depot College Awards Show, which is nationally televised each December.
McClellan is one of two senior running backs on UA’s 2023 roster, along with Roydell Williams. But the former has more career touches after finishing the 2022 season as the Crimson Tide’s second-leading rusher behind Jahmyr Gibbs, a first-round pick in April. With Gibbs no longer in town, McClellan presumably steps into the No. 1 back role in a money-making year for the Aledo, Texas, native. Alabama still has a loaded backfield this season, but with a full season to get back from injury, McClellan figures to once again be a big part of the UA offense.
