Alabama Signing Day Capsule: In-state DB Tony Mitchell
An eventful recruitment has resulted in a final answer. Tony Mitchell, who committed to Alabama on June 26, officially signed with the Crimson Tide on Wednesday.
Although Mitchell stayed true to the verbal pledge he made in the summer, there was skepticism as to whether or not he’d end up signing with Alabama.

The coveted safety made multiple game day unofficial visits to Auburn and Texas A&M during the fall. This past weekend, Mitchell took an official visit to College Station after utilizing an official to Bama earlier this month.
Most of the rumors down the home stretch surrounded fellow in-state program Auburn. Mitchell had built a strong relationship with defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge and admitted that he felt comfortable at the school. There were even some projections made that Mitchell would ultimately flip to the Tigers.
In the end, however, Mitchell stuck it out with the Crimson Tide despite having Auburn and Texas A&M hats on the table on Wednesday. That’s big news for Alabama as Mitchell is the No. 63 overall prospect in the 2023 class and is the nation’s No. 6 safety.
Mitchell is expected to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando (Fla.) and will enroll at Alabama next month.

Thompson head coach, Mark Freeman, on Mitchell’s skill set (Full Story HERE): “I think they’re getting an unlimited resource who can play multiple positions. When he came to us a few years ago as a seventh grader or eighth grader, he was mainly known as an offensive star. We needed defensive help immediately. He went to a couple of camps and those guys felt the same way about his defensive skills.
“He’s a multiple-position player. He can play safety, nickel, and corner for us. Just a hard worker and just truly a good person.”
On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power’s analysis of Mitchell (Full Story HERE): “I think in watching Thompson the last couple of years, his ability to play multiple spots stands out. He’s physical coming down hill and striking. If you project him as a safety, he covers well. I think his experience as a corner projects him well as a cover safety. His ability to man up on receivers, slide him to the slot, and cover receivers in the slot. I think compared to other safeties nationally, he would probably be a little advanced in terms of coverage there.”
