Alabama tight end Danny Lewis Jr. plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos reports. Lewis is the eighth Crimson Tide player to transfer in the 20-day portal window.

Lewis, a redshirt sophomore, has played in all 12 of Alabama’s regular-season games but has not caught a pass this season. Lewis has appeared in 31 games over his three-year career with the Crimson Tide (5 in 2022, 14 in 2023) and made one start. But the veteran tight end has only caught one pass in his tenure – a 5-yard gain against Chattanooga last year.

Lewis’ likely departure (players can always remove their names from the transfer portal) means Alabama will only have five scholarship tight ends on its 2025 roster. Seniors Robbie Ouzts and CJ Dippre can’t come back, which would leave Josh Cuevas as the only experienced tight end in Tuscaloosa. This is a position Alabama could target in the transfer portal.

A native of New Iberia, Louisiana, Lewis was ranked as a 3-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He was considered the nation’s 32nd-best tight end that cycle and committed to Alabama over Florida, LSU and Cincinnati.

The NCAA transfer portal’s 20-day window opened on Monday, December 9, and will close on Saturday, December 28. A second, but brief, 10-day window will open from April 16-25.
