Alabama unveils official depth chart for Week 1 game vs. MTSU
Alabama will kick off the 2023 season later tonight, and before game time, the Crimson Tide unveiled its official depth chart for its Week 1 matchup against Middle Tennessee.
We learned Friday that Jalen Milroe will start at quarterback, according to ESPN, backing up what the spring and summer had been suggesting. But Alabama coach Nick Saban has said the Game 1 starter won’t necessarily be the guy all year – competition will continue. Milroe, Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson and Dylan Lonergan were separated by an “or.”
In addition to Buchner, 20 newcomers were on the Week 1 depth chart, including 13 true freshmen. Two of them, safety Caleb Downs and offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, were listed as starters ahead of the season opener. All five of the Tide’s additions via the transfer portal appeared on the depth chart, with linebacker Trezman Marshall, safety Jaylen Key and tight end CJ Dippre landing on the top lines of their respective position groups.
Outside of the quarterbacks, there were also 10 other ors on the depth chart, signifying an ongoing competition among two or more players. However, only two of those ors separated first-team players, and those were at the tight end position and at the X receiver spot. Dippre and second-year tight end Danny Lewis were listed as co-starters, while junior college transfer Malik Benson and veteran Ja’Corey Brooks shared the first-team role.
Below is Alabama’s complete depth chart for Week 1, ors and all.
