Another Alabama player enters the transfer portal following spring
Last week, redshirt senior Stephon Wynn Jr. entered the transfer portal. He was the first player to enter since the conclusion of spring practice. Now, there’s reportedly been a second player who is looking to continue his playing career elsewhere.
On Monday afternoon, On3’s college football reporter Matt Zenitz shared the news that second-year defensive back Kaine Williams was entering the portal. Considering his projected spot on the depth chart, the former Marrero (La.) John Ehret standout electing to leave shouldn’t come as a shock to fans.
Coming out of high school in 2021, Williams was rated as a four-star prospect, according to the On3 Consensus rankings. He also checked in as the No. 245 overall player, No. 16 safety and No. 9 player from the state of Louisiana in those same rankings.
Williams didn’t see any action until the national title game when he participated on special teams against the Georgia Bulldogs. It was unlikely that his role — at least on defense — was going to increase in 2022 with Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams returning for their senior seasons.

Throw in the emergence of Kristian Story and Devonta Smith as the backups, and Williams’ path to playing time was murky at best. Instead, he’ll choose to try out his luck elsewhere.
Williams had originally worn the No. 49 for the Crimson Tide but had since switched to No. 20 for his second season. That’s now a number that could be available for one of the incoming freshmen who didn’t arrive prior to the start of spring practice.
