Areas Alabama improved — Turnover margin

Saban has been preaching about winning the turnover battle for weeks now. Through the first seven games, Alabama only had five turnovers. In addition, they had committed 10, which had them negative-5 in turnover margin. That’s why they were ranked outside the top-100 nationally in that category.

This game against Mississippi State didn’t drastically alter those season numbers (they’re now ranked No. 99), but Alabama did finish positive in the turnover battle on Saturday.

First off, the offense didn’t turn the football over. That now makes two straight games, as the turnover against Tennessee came on special teams. That’s encouraging. Unfortunately, Alabama’s defense also wasn’t the one to force a turnover against the Bulldogs. That, too, happened on special teams.

Still, I want to point out that this Alabama defense is close. Like, really close.

Kool-Aid McKinstry almost had an interception, but it was overturned. DeMarcco Hellams and Jordan Battle came close on a couple of throws. Oh, and we can’t forget about the strip-sack on Will Rogers that was reviewed and called an incomplete pass. Like I said, Alabama is close.

In the end, the players have to finish some of these plays, but I believe that’s going to get going at some point. Sooner rather than later, too.
