A-Day standouts – DB Caleb Downs
Simply put, Caleb Downs doesn’t look like a true freshman.
That statement goes for his physical makeup, as well as the way he plays the game. On Saturday afternoon, the 2023 Five-Star Plus defensive back finished second on the Crimson team (first-team defense) in tackles (8) with one of those going for a loss. He also added an interception on the last play of the first half.

In other words, he continues to live up to the hype.
Looking back through the scrimmage, I found several occasions of Downs attacking the line of scrimmage with some authority. It’s easy to see how aggressive and physical he plays as an alley run defender, but you also saw the fluidity and silky smooth approach in coverage that made him a top-10 recruit for the 2023 cycle.
Here’s a perfect example that I found and shared on Twitter:
I’ll continue to reiterate that Downs is a transformative piece in Alabama’s secondary.
For any fans worried about losing Jordan Battle, DeMarcco Hellams, Brian Branch and Eli Ricks on the back half, hopefully the unit answered any questions or concerns on Saturday. Now to be completely fair to the situation, the quarterback play wasn’t great, but the secondary showed plenty of promise with a strong mix of returning and high-quality young talent.
