Quick observations from A-Day

Redshirt freshman Danny Lewis got the start at tight end for the White offense. There’s been buzz surrounding the former three-star recruit this spring, but it was still somewhat of a surprise. We still saw plenty of Maryland transfer CJ Dippre, but the target share was heavily in favor of Lewis (four for Lewis, two for Dippre). Things can still change between now and Week 1, but don’t be surprised if Lewis has sizable role in this offense this season.

Speaking of tight ends, they’re obviously going to be a big part of Alabama’s offense under new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Of the 24 passes caught in the first half alone, eight of them were by a tight end (33%). Obviously, Lewis and Dippre ran with the first-team offense, but Amari Niblack (three catches for 12 yards on five targets) had some moments with the second team. The closer you get to the red zone, the higher his usage.

A couple of the inside linebackers looked really strong. I’ll have to go back and watch, but I think Alabama had Jihaad Campbell lining up at the Mike spot early on with Trezmen Marshall playing Will. I’m not entirely sure on that yet, so stay tuned. I do think Marshall played both spots throughout the scrimmage though, which makes sense with Deontae Lawson‘s role (does he play Mike or Will) still up in the air.

Campbell was extremely effective as an off-ball blitzer. With outside linebackers Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell both out with injuries, that added pass rush is extremely useful. I also thought Justin Jefferson was as-advertised. He hasn’t generated a lot of buzz this spring, but he’s such a fluid guy in coverage. I also noticed at least one impressive run stuff where he was able to work his way through a block and bring down the running back for little-to-no gain.
