Assessing Alabama’s potential portal needs – QB
We know Alabama is likely to lose Bryce Young. Considering he’s won a Heisman Trophy and is viewed as one of — if not — the best quarterbacks in school history, that’s a significant loss for the Crimson Tide. The cupboard isn’t left completely bare, however.
Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson will both be back, and the Tide currently have two top-10 signal-callers committed in its 2023 class in Eli Holstein and Dylan Lonergan. If that quarterback room holds, there won’t be much of a need to add a player out of the transfer portal. That being said, there’s a lot that can change.

First off, we don’t know if the loser of the Milroe-Simpson battle will stick around. Let’s hypothetically say Simpson wins the job and Milroe leaves, that would leave Alabama with two first-year quarterbacks and a second-year guy who has little to no experience. That’s a dangerous game to play when you’re trying to compete for a national championship.
Plus, you never know when a season-altering signal-caller decides to enter the portal.
Last offseason, Alabama wasn’t actively looking to add a running back, but Jahmyr Gibbs was simply too good to pass up. The team also pursued elite talents such as wide receiver Jordan Addison despite not having a clear need. My point? If the right quarterback enters, I can see Alabama being open to the idea.
Need: Alabama could pursure the right quarterback if he’s made available.
