What the media got right, wrong (preview)

Right – the entire first-team list: For the most part, I agreed with the entire first-team group of Alabama players. Quarterack Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson Jr. are automatics, but I also think linebacker Henry To’oTo’o, safety Jordan Battle and offensive guard Emil Ekiyor Jr. are all more than deserving.

There’s another interesting note, too.

Of the nine players to make the list (running back Jahmyr Gibbs made it twice to make a total of 10 selections), three of them have never taken a snap for the Crimson Tide. That trio includes Gibbs, wide receiver Jermaine Burton and cornerback Eli Ricks.

That’s the caliber player Nick Saban and company are attracting in the transfer portal.

Wrong – choosing Moore over Branch: Look, I think Malachi Moore has a chance at a bounce back season. After starring during his freshman year back in 2020, the in-state product somewhat regressed in Year 2. Some of that is due to injury, but we also can’t ignore the regression altogether.

Not only that, but I’m also concerned about Moore’s projected usage.

I still believe he’ll be involved, but fellow junior defensive back Brian Branch will likely man the Star position with Alabama’s starters. To me, this is the more likely candidate for a breakout season after his impressive spring, which included a few game-changing forced turnovers.

There are a lot of quality defensive backs in the SEC, but I had Branch pegged as a strong third-team option with a chance to even make the second team. Unfortunately, that didn’t end up being the case, as he was left off the teams entirely. Expect him to make some postseason lists though.
