Rose Bowl matchups – Bond v. Sainristil
*Note: This is a preview.
Height/Weight: 5-10, 182
Background: 3-star / No. 590 / No. 88 WR (2019)
2023 stats:
- 30 tackles
- 3.0 tackles for loss
- 1.0 sack
- 10 pressures (PFF)
- 5 interceptions
- 6 pass breakups
- 2 forced fumbles
Quick thoughts: Mike Sainristil isn’t overly big. He’s only listed at 5-10, 182 pounds, but reports are that he’s a lot closer to 5-9. His size doesn’t limit him very much though, as the veteran defensive back plays fast and aggressive while manning Michigan’s nickel cornerback position. Not only does he rank fifth nationally in interceptions with five, but he’s also capable of generating negative plays by way of tackles for loss, sacks, pressures and even forced fumbles. After spending his first three seasons in Ann Arbor at wide receiver, Sainristil made the move to defense in 2022. Since then, he’s played 1,240 snaps and gotten 24 starts while being one of the most productive defenders on this UM roster.
Important matchup for Sainristil: WR Isaiah Bond — So far, Bond has played 555 snaps this season. Of those 555 snaps, he’s spent 284 in the slot, which comes out to just over half (51.2%). That includes 59 of the 101 snaps (58.4%) he’s played in Alabama’s last two games (Auburn and Georgia). This means he’ll likely face off against Sainristil quite a bit on Monday. What’s even more interesting is at 5-11, 182 pounds, Bond shares similar size. I do wonder if Alabama could draw up a few situations where Amari Niblack (6-4, 233) is aligned as a big slot to create mismatches on Sainristil, but either way, there should be plenty of eyes on the slot matchup in this game. It goes beyond just the coverage too, as the Michigan DB is also capable of generating pressure on Milroe and Alabama’s passing attack.
