Alabama will play Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow afternoon at approximately 3:15 pm CT. Making the Tournament is an accomplishment. Virginia won the national championship very recently. They aren’t in the NCAA Tournament this year.
In honor of these heady times for Bama Basketball fans, today we name the All-Time Alabama Basketball Team. Two of them, in fact. The first team we name will be The Best Players to Ever Play Basketball at Alabama. This squad is comprised of the five best players to grace Alabama with their presence. Their stay may have been long or brief or highly productive at UA or not … but they proved, over the course of long careers, that they were Alabama’s all-time greats. The second team will be The Best Careers WHILE AT Alabama. Let’s use Collin Sexton as an example. Maybe he is one of the five best to ever play here? Yet, with just one season of production, it’s hard to argue he had an all-time career WHILE AT Alabama, right? Got it? Okay then, on to the unveiling.
Alabama’s All-Time Basketball Team
PG Collin Sexton
Perhaps the sample size is too small, that’s arguable. Collin is included for his draft position (8th overall) and has the highest scoring average in the NBA for any former Alabama player of all-time (20 PPG).
G Latrell Sprewell
He was the 24th pick by the Warriors in the 1992 NBA Draft. He then played in 913 NBA games over 13 years, averaging an astounding 18 PPG over all of it. He was selected to play in the NBA All-Star game 4 times. He was first-team All-NBA in 1994, just his second year in the Association.
F Robert Horry
Big Shot Bob Horry played in an incredible 1107 games over 16 seasons in the NBA, winning a jaw-dropping 7 NBA World Championships. The Rockets selected him 11th overall in the 1992 Draft. He scored 7,715 points in his pro career.
F Antonio McDyess
It might surprise you to recall that McDyess, like Horry, played 16 seasons in the NBA, over 1000 games. He is the highest drafted player from Alabama of all-time, 2nd overall by the Denver Nuggets in 1995. He was an NBA All Star in 2001 and was All-NBA Third Team in 1999 and won a Gold Medal in the US Olympics in 2000. He scored 12,227 points in his pro career.
F Derrick McKey
The Meridian,MS native played 15 seasons in the NBA and was twice named to the NBA All Defensive team (Second Team). He was named to the All Rookie Team in 1988. He was selected 9th overall in the 1987 Draft. He scored over 10,000 points for the SuperSonics, Pacers and 76ers.
