TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama will be without forward Derrion Reid for a third straight game, but head coach Nate Oats provided a positive update on the true freshman’s progress after Reid visited the university’s team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lyle Cain for an evaluation.

“He’s improving, progressing, getting better, and he’ll be evaluated week to week but not gonna go tomorrow. So he’s out,” Oats said on Monday. “But they thought he looked good, so he’s coming along.”

Reid has battled a leg injury for most of the year. He returned for the Auburn game on Feb. 15 after a 2-week absence but only played four minutes and aggravated the setback in the loss to the top-ranked team. Reid initially hurt his hamstring after the Tide’s trip to Texas A&M on Jan. 11, missing two weeks, returned for two games and then missed two more.

A former McDonald’s All-American, Reid has missed nine games this season, and the matchup with No. 24 Mississippi State will be his 10th. He has averaged 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in his 18 appearances while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor.

With Reid out, Alabama will be down to nine available players against the Bulldogs. Latrell Wrightsell Jr. (Achilles), Houston Mallette (knees) and Naas Cunningham (redshirt).

The SEC’s initial availability report for Tuesday’s games will be released on Monday evening at 7:10 p.m. CT, and a final update will be unveiled two hours before the games tip off.

Alabama’s home game against Mississippi State is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
