Derrion Reid update: Nate Oats shares latest before SEC Tournament

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama freshman forward Derrion Reid returned to practice on Monday, albeit in a limited role, and Nate Oats was hopeful the Crimson Tide could get Reid back in time for the SEC Tournament, which started today in Nashville (UA doesn’t play until Friday).
On Wednesday afternoon, before the team departed Tuscaloosa, Oats spoke with reporters at Coleman Coliseum and provided the latest update on the former McDonald’s All-American.
“Derrion was able to practice in some limited capacity but wasn’t doing 5-on-5 stuff,” Oats said. “Provided he has another good day tomorrow morning in practice, hopefully he’ll be cleared to play for the weekend, which would be great. It would give us a little bit more depth if we’re fortunate enough to end up playing three games in a row.”
Reid hasn’t played in a game since Alabama’s home loss to Auburn on February 15, and even then, he only played four minutes in Round 1 versus the in-state Tigers. Reid initially suffered a hamstring injury after the Tide’s win over Texas A&M on January 11 and missed two weeks. He came back for two games (Miss. State, Georgia) and missed two more weeks.
Reid has played in 18 games during his rookie season, making three starts, but has missed a total of 13 contests. The freshman is averaging 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds this season.

Alabama is without Latrell Wrightsell (Achilles) and Houston Mallette (knees) for the rest of the season. The only other player dealing with an injury besides Reid, according to Oats, is Grant Nelson, who is coming up off a monster game against Auburn but is still banged up.
“I think we’re as healthy as we can be,” Oats said. “Obviously, we’ve got a couple guys out for the year. Grant would be the one. He kind of missed practice going into Auburn, but if he can play like he did against Auburn, I think looked pretty healthy that game.
“If we can get Grant and Derrion back at full strength and helping us, we’ll be in great shape to try to play three in a row.”
Alabama, the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament, will face the winner of Kentucky and either Georgia or Oklahoma on Friday, March 14. The game will tip off 25 minutes after the 6 p.m. CT game ends, and the last quarterfinal matchup of the day will air on the SEC Network.
