DeVonta Smith update: Kalen DeBoer shares latest on injured Tide DB
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer shared the latest on defensive back DeVonta Smith, who left Saturday’s game at LSU with an injury and didn’t return to the field.
“That would be something, I think, just throughout the week we’ll continue to manage and kind of see where he’s at,” DeBoer said on Monday. “I haven’t heard the update today, but I think he’ll be fine as the week continues on.”
Smith stayed down in the Crimson Tide’s 42-13 win in Baton Rouge and received attention from Alabama trainers before gingerly walking to the sideline under his own power. Smith didn’t enter the medical tent but was evaluated on the visiting bench by the training staff.
Before his exit, Smith registered five tackles in an impressive defensive showing from Alabama. The redshirt junior defensive back made his eighth start of the season against LSU. Appearing in all nine games thus far, Smith has battled injuries throughout the fall but is responsible for 20 tackles, five pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble.

Smith has been the Tide’s starting Husky defensive back in Year 1 of Kane Wommack’s “swarm” defense. On Saturday at Tiger Stadium, he was replaced by DaShawn Jones. The Wake Forest transfer began the year at cornerback but moved to Husky after the injury to Keon Sabb. Versus LSU, Jones closed out the game with three tackles and half of a sack.
“He’s been just right there, ready to go,” DeBoer said of Jones. “We’ve moved him around a little bit with positions just because he’s a very versatile player. He’s got game experience with his past and coming in, just kind of learning things and being ready to go.
“I’m really proud of him for that. So I’m excited about his growth that he’s had and the opportunities he’s taking advantage of like he did on Saturday.”
Alabama will welcome Mercer to Tuscaloosa on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. CT (ESPN+).
