Former Alabama offensive lineman Tyler Steen has been drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round (No. 65 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. Needless to say, the transfer tackle’s lone season playing on the Crimson Tide’s offensive line in Tuscaloosa was a major success.

With this selection, Alabama has now seen five of its players taken during the first two days of the draft. Steen joins quarterback Bryce Young (No. 1), edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. (No. 3), running back Jahmyr Gibbs (No. 12) and defensive back Brian Branch (No. 45).

Steen will also be joining an offense that already included three former Alabama players as starters. Jalen Hurts starts at quarterback, DeVonta Smith is a starting wide receiver and Landon Dickerson is the first-team left guard. Not only are all of these guys in the starting lineup, but they’ve also been impact players in Philadelphia.

Steen won’t be handed a starting job, but being the first pick in the third round means that he’ll have every opportunity. With Issac Seumalo leaving via free agency, there’s an opening at right guard. Dickerson could kick over to that side or maybe Steen will compete with 2022 second-round pick Cam Jurgens for that spot.

Steen began his playing career at Vanderbilt back in 2018.

He spent four seasons with the Commodores as either a right or left tackle. After seeing 2,216 snaps from 2019-21, he transferred to Alabama prior to the start of the 2022 season. He almost instantly became the team’s left tackle, starting in all 13 games while playing a career-high 841 snaps. That put him at 3,057 for his career.

Coming out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) in 2018, Steen wasn’t a highly-rated recruit. The 6-foot-6, 321-pound lineman was a three-star who also checked in as the No. 1,175 player nationally, No. 113 offensive tackle and No. 184 player from the state of Florida, according to the 2018 On3 Industry Rankings.

Needless to say, he’s come a long ways. Now,
