Everything Jaylen Moody said in Tuesday press conference
Alabama fifth-year linebacker Jaylen Moody spoke with the media on Tuesday following the team’s second scrimmage this past weekend. Reporters asked him about his decision to exit the transfer portal, what his approach is to competition and how he would describe his game.
Below, we’ve included everything Moody said in response to those questions, plus more.
On his decision to exit the transfer portal…
“I really just came back because this is where I want to be at. Alabama has been a home for me for four years and going into my last year, I wanna make an impact, and what better place to do that than home. I love it here. Everybody’s been helping me. My teammates have been positive and give me support. And so, I’m just happy to be back and just looking forward to having a great season.”
On what’s his approach to competition…
“Mainly, I’m just trying to come back and show a leader’s mentality, really show the guys the way it’s supposed to be done. Lead by example, and just be that guy that the guys can look up to and really show that I’m ready. And that it’s time that I can be that guy and be a leader and be a good role model.”
On what he learned from Brian Robinson…
“Brian, having the chance to see Brian this season and how he handled everything, it really has helped me, motivate me to go about my business the right way. He handled it very mature. And to just see him wait his turn, grind and stay focused helped me to stay the course and be ready for when anything happens or when my time comes, I can be ready for any situation.”
On how he would describe his game…
“I think I’m a very instinctive guy. I definitely like to say that I process things very well. And I just let a lot of things come to me. I think I’m a very instinctive player, for real. I think I can help the defense in many ways by just doing my job, showing that I’m ready for any situation or just being able to play my role. I think I communicate very well. I think I help the defense by being able to be vocal, put people in position and then also understanding where everybody needs to be. As a linebacker, being versatile playing MIKE and WILL.”
On how attitudes towards the transfer portal change over time…
“Having this new process, being able to be in the portal and everything, that’s been different for everybody — also myself. A lot of guys being here now, I see a lot of guys, they want to be here. Alabama is a special place. It does a lot of things to put you in a position where you want to be, especially getting to the next level. I see a lot of guys trying to use it to better themselves. It could be, I wanna say good or bad.”

On why he believes he’s ready to be a starter…
“I’ve been here for what, four years now. I just think I’ve been here a long time and I have been able to learn the defense. And just being able to grow, learn from the guys here before me, Christian – a lot of guys that have been ahead of me. So, I think that I’ve spent a lot of time learning and just trying to go through the process. So, I just feel like it’s time.”
On what his process was like being recruited by Alabama…
“Back when I was at home, Coach Golding had hit me up in the recruiting process. He has helped me. Come in here to help me progress as a player, to grow into the potential that I feel like I have in myself and be the player that I know I can be. Alabama has transformed me into the player that I am today, the man I am today. And just the experiences that I have learned being here helped mold me into the man I am today. I feel like there’s so much more to grow, and the sky’s the limit.”
On Malachi Moore…
“Malachi being here again, he’s a guy who’s been here before. He has a lot of experience. He’s very confident on the backend and can communicate very efficiently and effectively to put people in a position where they need to be. It’s good having him back, another leader that can be very vocal in the back end and help the young guys to develop.”
On celebrating John Mitchell, Wilbur Jackson…
“Right now, I’m just mainly been focused on what I need to do to be here as a player and help the team. I’m not really too sure about that.”
