The Alabama men’s basketball team received good news on Saturday as senior forward Grant Nelson announced he will return to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for his fifth and final season.

Nelson, a senior, has one season of eligibility remaining after spending three seasons at North Dakota State and one year at Alabama. Nelson went through the draft process a year ago but chose to withdraw while remaining in the transfer portal. Nelson ultimately chose to weigh his options and chose to play for Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide in 2023-24.

Now, he will be back at Alabama for a second year and a fifth year in college basketball.

Nelson appeared in and started all 37 games at Alabama and scored in double figures in 24 of those contests. He averaged 11.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field as a senior. Nelson recorded four double-doubles this past season, including two in the Crimson Tide’s historic postseason run to the Final Four.

Nelson played his best game in Alabama’s Sweet 16 matchup with No. 1-seed North Carolina, where he finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots to help the Crimson Tide advance to its second-ever Elite Eight. Nelson became only the fourth player in NCAA Tournament history to record that stat line or better against a single-digit seed.

Nelson is the second senior to announce he will return to Alabama for the 2024-25 season, joining Latrell Wrightsell Jr. Nick Pringle has entered the NCAA transfer portal, while Mark Sears officially declared for the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility.
