Has Kalen DeBoer considered adding Ryan Grubb to his staff at Alabama?
MOBILE, Ala. – Has Kalen DeBoer considered hiring Ryan Grubb?
The Alabama head coach was asked that on Tuesday while visiting his players at the Senior Bowl. DeBoer didn’t fully answer the question, but he didn’t close the door on the possibility of his longtime colleague returning to Tuscaloosa and rejoining his coaching staff.
“We go way back,” DeBoer told reporters at Hancock Whitney Stadium. “He’s a great friend of mine. I think the world of him as a football coach. Obviously as a person, too.
“I know he’s working through his process after what last season brought. Just kind of seeing what he does there and here for him whenever he needs me. That’s always gonna be the case.”
Grubb was most recently in the NFL as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator after a cup of coffee in Tuscaloosa, but in addition to last January, Grubb has plenty of history with DeBoer, who is entering his second season as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Grubb was with DeBoer at Washington, Fresno State, Eastern Michigan and Sioux Falls – and briefly Alabama. He was the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Sioux Falls from 2007-09, the offensive line coach at Eastern Michigan from 2014-16 and the associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State from 2020-21.

Grubb followed DeBoer to Seattle when the latter was named the Huskies head coach. Two seasons ago, UW had one of the nation’s top offenses, capping the calendar with the country’s second-best passing offense (343.7 yards per game). Led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Washington also finished the 2023-24 campaign ranked inside the 15 nationally in both total offense (462.1 ypg, 12th) and scoring offense (36.0 points per game, 13th).
Grubb initially agreed to follow DeBoer to a fifth stop at Alabama this past offseason, but less than a month as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, he agreed to go back to Seattle as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator. DeBoer promoted Nick Sheridan, the tight ends coach, to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2024.
However, after just one year, Grubb was relieved of his duties in Seattle. What will his next stop be? That remains to be seen, but on Tuesday, DeBoer did not rule out Alabama.
