Alabama basketball started the highly-awaited 2024-25 season with a bang, dominating UNC Asheville on Monday 110-54 to start the season 1-0. The Crimson Tide has another game opening week after just a few days off, with Arkansas State coming to town on Friday night.
The Red Wolves have a familiar face at head coach in former Alabama assistant Bryan Hodgson, who’s in his second year in Jonesboro. Arkansas State was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt coming off a season where it lost in the Sun Belt championship, coming one game away from an NCAA Tournament berth in Hodgson’s first season.
Hodgson coached under Nate Oats at Buffalo, and followed him to Alabama, where he was an assistant until the 2022-23 season. He was Alabama’s top recruiter while he was in Tuscaloosa, and helped reel in prospects like Brandon Miller, Charles Bediako and Josh Primo.
This will be Hodgson’s second time back in Coleman Coliseum, after Arkansas State played Alabama last December and lost in blowout fashion.
Arkansas State has a very solid roster for a mid-major program, with multiple high-major transfers brought in by Hodgson since he took the job.
