No. 8 Alabama basketball suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night, falling on the road at the hands of then-No. 13, now-No. 6 Purdue by a final score of 87-78.

Due to the quality of Purdue and the difficulty of Mackey Arena, the loss doesn’t hurt Alabama’s resume too badly. In fact, the Crimson Tide has a number of opportunities for some Quad 1 wins on the schedule for the next month, with the next opportunity coming against No. 25 Illinois on Wednesday.

The game will be played in Legacy Arena in Birmingham, the Crimson Tide’s annual C.M. Newton Classic game. The game was officially named the C.M. Newton Classic in the 2021-22 season following the renovations to Legacy Arena, with Alabama holding a 2-1 record since the game began.

Illinois came into the season picked fourth in the Big Ten, behind Purdue, Indiana and UCLA. Brad Underwood‘s team is coming off an Elite Eight appearance, where his team fell to eventual national champion UConn in blowout fashion.

The Fighting Illini started the season 3-0, beating three mid-major teams at home across the first two weeks of the season. This will be the first game against high-major competition for Illinois, who climbed into the final spot of the AP Poll in this week’s rankings.

This game is the first in a semi home-and-home agreement, with Alabama traveling to Chicago to play Illinois in the United Center during next season’s non-conference slate.
